Irish plant shuts down after more horsemeat discovered in burgers
Around 10 million burgers have already been recalled
January 18, 2013
Silvercrest Foods, Ireland’s second-largest supermarket beef patty producer, has shut down operations after food quality officials again found trace amounts of horsemeat in the company’s burgers, according to the Associated Press. The Irish Agriculture Department announced that nine of 13 burgers analyzed tested positive for horse DNA, but that only one ingredient in the burgers tested positive. That as-yet unidentified ingredient is imported from another EU country. The company already recalled about 10 million burgers and announced production lines will remain down until the issue has been resolved.
