Much attention has been placed on foreign market viability, building overseas versus exporting from the U.S. and partnering with foreign companies. U.S. investment in foreign food manufacturing surpassed foreign investments into the U.S. in 1993 and stood at $36.18 billion by the end of 1996, according toFood Engineering's Overseas Manufacturing report (January 1999, p. 43).
