Biolume Ltd., a subsidiary of Prolume Ltd. (Pittsburgh, PA), recently received a patent for self-illuminating food and beverages, which contain bioluminescence-generating systems such as luciferaces and luciferins as well as fluorescent proteins as additives. Although the process is still not approved by the FDA, novelties such as glowing cake frosting, ice cream, yogurts as well as beverages could have wide appeal.
