Whatman worked with the FDA to produce the FTA Concentrator-PS, a portable two-stage filter that detects dangerous parasites in fresh produce and water supplies. The product provides a field test for Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Cyclosporia and other parasites. It is undergoing testing for use as a universal detector of harmful organisms. The field test itself takes 15 minutes and definitive results can be obtained the same day. The kit is for routine monitoring of domestic product and determining the source of water contamination. It uses FTA technology, a chemically treated matrix that rapidly isolates and protects nucleic acids at room temperatures. The sample, such as produce wash, passes over the matrix, concentrating and destroying parasites.
