McDonald’s will be the first national restaurant to add a sustainable seafood label to its packaging. Filet of fish sandwiches, made with Alaskan Pollack, will bear the Marine Stewardship Council’s blue “ecolabel” to signify that the seafood comes from sustainable suppliers. The Council has about 300 fisheries in its program, representing 12 to 14 percent of the world’s fisheries. Fisheries wishing to receive the certification can undergo a confidential pre-assessment for guidance on whether they’re ready for certification. Retailers such as Wal Mart and Whole Foods already use the Council’s label. Several similar organizations offer certifications as well.
