FDA announced Tuesday it extended the comment period on the proposed rule relating to the sanitary transportation of human and animal food by 60 days.
The comment period was scheduled to end May 31. FDA said the extension also applies to the associated information collection provisions.
According to FDA, the decision is a response to requests the administration received asking for additional time to be considered.
The proposed rule is required by FMSA and requires food to be transported under sanitary conditions to ensure safety. FDA said the rule would “require certain shippers, receivers, and carriers who transport food by motor or rail vehicles to take steps to prevent the contamination of human and animal food during transportation.”
Certain criteria established by the rule would include measures such as proper refrigeration, cleaning between loads and protecting food during transportation.
