Proposed legislation to set federal standard for labels on GM food
The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food, a trade group supporting genetically modified (GM) food, is voicing support for proposed legislation to set a federal standard for labels on GM food. The group says the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act would remove the confusion and uncertainty of a 50-state patchwork of GMO safety and labeling laws. It would also affirm FDA as the nation’s authority for the use and labeling of genetically modified food ingredients. The bill, which has bipartisan support, would override action in more than half the states, where efforts are currently underway to pass GM food labeling laws.
