Former Food Engineering editor Charles Morris Jr. passed away July 12 at the age of 84.

Morris joined Food Engineering in 1979 as Midwest editor. He worked for the magazine until his retirement in 2003 as Senior Editor. During his time with the magazine, he won two Jesse H. Neal Awards from the American Business Press Association for excellence in business journalism. He also was a member of the Institute of Food Technologists and served on the board of directors for the food branch of the Food & Drug Law Institute.

Before joining Food Engineering, Morris worked as a supermarket manager, an editor for Chain Store Age magazine and as a public relations executive.

Morris was born May 9, 1934 in Chicago. He graduated from St. George High School in Evanston, Ill., and St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1952 and served 24 years before retiring with the rank of Commander. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosemary, two brothers, three children, seven granddaughters and one great-grandson.
